NEW DELHI: Afghanistan's Interior Minister Khalifa Sirajuddin Haqqani and Foreign Minister Mawlawi Amir Khan Muttaqi received a Malaysian delegation comprising senior officials from the home, foreign affairs and defence ministries and the Prime Minister's Office.

During a meeting in Kabul yesterday (April 25), Haqqani expressed Afghanistan's desire to boost relations with Malaysia.

Haqqani informed the Malaysian officials that Afghans enjoy peace and unity, and Afghanistan is in control of its own affairs under the interim government.

"He told the delegation that Afghanistan wants close relations and interaction with the whole world, especially the Islamic countries. He further added that Malaysia is a developed Islamic country and we should use the experiences that are compatible with our geographical and historical position," an Afghan Interior Ministry statement said today (April 26).

Malaysia and Afghanistan also discussed cooperation in police training and combating drug trafficking.

Datuk Dr Shazelina Zainul Abidin, an undersecretary at the Malaysian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, provided information to the Afghan side on Malaysia's expertise in cyber security and fighting digital crimes.

During the interaction with the Afghan foreign minister on Wednesday, she said Malaysia is ready to organise training programmes for Afghan diplomats and civil service employees, according to a statement on the Afghan Foreign Ministry website.

The minister thanked Malaysia for extending humanitarian assistance to Afghanistan over the years.

Muttaqi highlighted trade and investment opportunities in Afghanistan to boost bilateral engagements and expressed the country's keenness to grow its relations with Southeast Asia. — BERNAMA
