KUALA LUMPUR: National diving queen Pandelela Rinong brought some much needed cheer to the national diving squad when she won bronze in the women’s 10m individual platform at the the FINA Diving World Cup in Wuhan, China earlier today (Wednesday).

Pandelela, 25, amassed 349.15 points after five dives in the final that was held at the Natatorium Sports Centre in Wuhan.

Gold and silver went to divers from the host nation, with Zhang Jiaqi coming out tops with 427.30 points, followed by compatriot Ren Qiang who finished with 403.85 points to take second place.

For the record, only the top 12 divers qualify for the final out of 18 who featured in the semi-final round.

Malaysia’s other divers competing in Wuhan, Ahmad Amsyar Azman-Ooi Tze Liang could only manage a 10th place finish in the men’s 3m springboard synchro final after posting 379.41 points.

Early in the preliminary round, Ahmad-Tze Liang had registered 358.47 points to take 10th place.

Cao Yuan-Xie Siyi took the gold for China with 448.74 points, as Britain’s Jack Laugher-Chris Mears came in second with 440.64 points, followed by Mexicans Marroquin Ocampo-Rommel Pacheco who posted 435.72 points.

Earlier on Monday, Pandelela and Amsyar managed an impressive fourth place finish in the team event.
