MUAR: A one-hour boat ride involving several boats was held at the Muar River recently in conjunction with Merdeka Day.

The ride, from Tuah jetty to Panchur, involved 12 boats which took 36 passengers.

The ride was organised by Bukit Pasir state assemblyman Najib Lep together with fishermen and village heads.

"This Merdeka river ride is to foster patriotism and promote tourism in Muar and Johor. One village industry that can be promoted is the cultivation of giant river prawns at Muar river banks," said Najib.

He also hoped that several worn down jetties could be repaired and upgraded with budget from the Johor state government.

Villagers received food supplies, sanitisers and portable spray equipment from Najib, Kampung Paya Panjang village head Azhar Md Arof, and Taman Pagoh Jaya community head Zuraini Kunting during stopovers at several jetties along the river.
