SIK: A religious school teacher was charged at the Baling Sessions Court here today with causing physical and emotional injuries on his eight-year-old student on Nov 11.

The accused Amirul Hakim Johari, 27, however pleaded not guilty and claimed trial when the charge was read before Judge Najwa Che Mat.

Amirul Hakim is alleged to have caused physical and emotional injuries on the boy at a Madrasah here.

The accused, who hails from Petaling Jaya, Selangor, is charged under Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001 which is punishable under the same Act.

He is liable to a fine of not more than RM50,000 or imprisonment of up to 20 years, or both upon conviction.

Deputy public prosecutor Muhamad Ikmal Affandi Zulkifli prosecuted while lawyer Al-Sabri Ahmad Kabri represented the accused.

Muhamad Ikmal proposed for the court to impose RM30,000 bail but the defence pleaded for a lower bail amount as the accused is a low income earner.

He added that the accused also has a child and a wife who is due to deliver their second child next week. He has also given full cooperation to the authorities.

The court subsequently fixed bail at RM10,000 with one surety and set Jan 21, 2024 for mention.

The court also ordered the accused to report himself at the nearest police station and not to disturb the victim and witnesses.

Yesterday, the media reported that a student at a religious school in Sik suffered multiple injuries on his body suspected to have been whipped by his teacher using a PVC pipe about two weeks ago.

According to a Facebook post uploaded by the victim's aunt yesterday, she said the boy suffered bruises on his back and waist.

Sik police chief Deputy Superintendent Abdull Razak Osman was reported as saying that police have picked up the teacher for investigation.
