KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Institute of Economic Research (MIER) has named Dr Anthony Dass as its executive director, effective Feb 16, 2024.

With a PhD in Economics from University Utara Malaysia in 2018 and Masters Economics and Finance University of Bristol, UK, Dass worked as a senior economist at Bank Negara Malaysia between 1988 and 1997, after beginning his career as an economist.

He worked for various equity investment organisations. Most recently, he was the chief economist and head of research at AmBank from 2013 to 2023. 

He also served as a special officer, Economic Action Council, Economic Planning Unit, Malaysia (May 2020 – 31 January 2023).

Dass focused on strategic issues and policies during the Covid-19 pandemic in relation to various economic and social policies, industries, and businesses.  

He worked extensively with various ministries, agencies, and associations on reforms and structural issues. He assisted the Ministry of International Trade and Industry in Malaysia between 2011 and 2013. 

According to a statement, Dass will oversee MIER, where innovative and significant initiatives are essential for the economy of the nation to advance and become a high-income, high-growth country.

MIER conducts independent, superior, problem-focused research on commercial, financial, and economic difficulties that the country faces. It also offers guidance on development, macroeconomic management, and prospects for the economy in the future.
