KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia will be sending a contingent made up of 382 athletes and officials for the Asean University Games (AUG) that will take place from December 10-19 in Naypyidaw, Myanmar.

Malaysia’s chief secretariat to this year’s AUG, Hamran Husin said that the national contingent’s athletes will take part in 16 out of 17 different types of sports that will be contested at the 19th edition of the biennial Games.

“The contingent’s Chef de Mission this time round will be University Malaysia Pahang’s deputy vice chancellor, Professor Datuk Dr. Yuserrie Zainuddin.

“The national contingent’s medals target will only be announced during the handing over ceremony of the Jalur Gemilang which is scheduled to happen on December 4 (Tuesday),” said Hamran.

He added that all the athletes who have been selected will take part in final preparation camp in Bangi which will begin from December 3 onwards up until the athletes depart for Myanmar in stages.

“Our participation this time round will also feature a couple of national athletes who will take part in athletics events and volleyball,” he said.

During the previous edition that was held in Singapore, Malaysia took third place overall behind Thailand and Indonesia with a haul of 27 gold, 29 silver and 34 bronze medals.

Myanmar will be hosting the AUG for the very first time and have determined that 17 sports will be contested including archery, athletics, badminton, basketball, chess, football, golf, karate, petanque, rowing, sepak takraw, swimming, ping pong, tennis, volleyball, vovinam and wushu.
