KUALA LUMPUR: Athletes competing in the Sarawak Malaysia Para Games will not be spared anti-doping tests during the event on Sept 22-28.

Anti-doping Agency of Malaysia (Adamas) director Azura Abidin said the national anti-doping organsation will be collecting samples thoughout the competition.

"All athletes will be subject to doping controls, including Para Malaysia Games athletes, based on the evaluations that will be conducted," said Azura.

"Samples will be collected based on medal positions, weighted random selection in team sports, as well as target testing for athletes already under the Adamas testing pool."

Azura said para athletes have different requirements compared to their able-bodied counterparts.

"Testing para athletes provides a unique challenge compared with able-bodied athletes. They will usually be accompanied by their coach, manager or family member during the reporting process to ensure that their specified needs are fulfilled," she added.

"The doping control officer (in charge) is not only trained in terms of the technical aspect of collecting samples, but also in terms of interpersonal skills to interact with the para athletes.

"This includes understanding the psychological impact of the test and proving a clear and detailed explanation about the procedure so the process is transparent and respects the athlete.

"The doping control officer will also be prepared with any necessary modifications for athletes with impairments, such as use of equipment or facilities, during the collection process to maintain the integrity of the sample."

Azura stressed that testing is conducted in line with the International Standard for Testing and Investigation, as well as the Doping Control Guide for Testing Athletes in Para Sport, which was developed by the International Paralympic Committee.
