KUALA LUMPUR: “My parents named me Golden Boy in the hope the name will bring honours to the family and the country,” said Indonesia’s wushu athlete Muhammad Daffa Golden Boy.

Muhammad Daffa, 17, was introduced to wushu when he was 10-years-old, had won two gold medals in the 2015 Asian Junior Wushu Championships in Mongolia.

“Initially I trained with my parents and later I developed an interest myself before I was selected to represent the country,” he told Bernama after the Qiangshu event at Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC) today.

Golden Boy who is making his Sea Games debut said he was happy winning the bronze medal behind Malaysia’s Yeap Wai Kin and Wong Weng Son, who won the gold and silver medals respectively.

Meanwhile Indonesia’s senior wushu exponent, Achmad Hulaefi, 28, said the sports was gaining popularity with more young athletes taking part.

“Our junior athletes such as Daffa has tremendous potential in future,” he said after winning the silver medal in the daoshu and gunshu events.

Indonesia is fielding 11 athletes for the three-day wushu competition which began yesterday. -- BERNAMA
