KUALA LUMPUR: Wushu world champion Wong Weng Son has set his mind to retire at the end of the year in spectacular fashion.

The 32-year-old aims to say goodbye with gold medals at the Asian Championships and the Taolu World Cup in September and October, respectively.

Despite being one of the oldest athletes in the national team, he has been a regular medal contributor.

Last year, he stood out as Malaysia's sole gold medallist at the World Championships in Texas, winning the Changquan event.

The Asian Championships, making a comeback after an eight-year hiatus, will take place in Macau from Sept 9-16.

At the 2016 edition in China, Weng Son won a gold medal in the Jianshu event.

"I want to retire this year, but I aim to win gold at the Asian Championships and the World Cup to end my career in glory," said Weng Son.

"Having clinched gold at the 2016 Asian Championships, I have eagerly awaited the opportunity to compete again against Asia's best."

Weng Son also hopes to continue his gold-medal streak at the World Cup in Japan on Oct 24-28.

For the record, he has won three World Cup titles — two (Jianshu and Qiangshu) in 2018 and one (Jianshu) in 2016.
