KUALA LUMPUR: The team from Sri Pentas emerged as overall champions of the 2018 Media Prima Berhad World Cup (2018 MPB World Cup) to lift the winners’ trophy at the University Malaya Stadium Arena here yesterday.

The Sri Pentas team confirmed their overall victory after they won two of the three categories contested here, namely the women’s open and men’s over 40 categories.

In the first match involving the men’s under 40 category, the Balai Berita team proved to be the better side as they edged Sri Pentas 5-4 on penalties.

Both teams were tied 1-1 with both sides’ goals coming in the first half. In the second half, neither Balai Berita nor Sri Pentas could break the deadlock as the match then went to penalties to decide the winner.

“A championship such as this can promote better relations, understanding and cooperation among those who take part, and all the players showed good sporting spirit,” said Media Prima Digital Sdn Bhd chief executive officer Rafiq Razali, who managed Sri Pentas’ men’s under 40 team.

Meanwhile in the women’s open match, Sri Pentas managed to upstage Balai Berita by winning 3-2 on penalties, after both teams were tied 2-2 when the final whistle was blown by the referee.

In the men’s over 40 category which was the last event to be contested, Sri Pentas prevailed over Balai Berita with a convincing 3-1 win.

The winners of each category took home a cash prize of RM500 while the runners-up received RM250. The trophy for the best cheerleading squad which came with RM500 cash prize was also won by Sri Pentas.

Yesterday, The New Straits Times Press Malaysia Bhd (NSTP) chief executive officer, Datuk Seri Abdul Jalil Hamid, who was also in action, said that the championship should be continued next year because it promotes better relations between the company’s employees. Jalil also took on the role of manager for Balai Berita’s men’s over 40 team while Media Prima Television Network (MPTN) chief executive officer Johan Ishak managed Sri Pentas’ team.

Big Tree Outdoor Sdn Bhd chief executive officer, Mohamad Shukor Ariffin managed Balai Berita’s men’s under 40 team while Media Prima Digital Sdn Bhd chief executive officer Rafiq Razali managed the Sri Pentas team.

Media Prima Group’s chief financial officer, Farnida Ngah took on the role of managing the Balai Berita women’s open team while the Sri Pentas team was led by Primeworks Studios chief executive officer Datuk Ahmad Izham Omar.
