KUALA KUBU BAHARU: There is sufficient opposition in Hulu Selangor, and candidates from the unity government should be given the opportunity to lead the Kuala Kubu Baharu by-election, said Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan.

The Umno Supreme Council member said this strategy is part of the party's campaign plan to ensure the unity government candidate secures the seat currently held by Pakatan Harapan.

He said voters must realise the need for an assemblyman from the unity government to ensure adequate representation of the electorate's interests.

"I urge the electorate in Kuala Kubu Baharu to cast their votes for the unity government candidate, considering the presence of three opposition members in the area of Hulu Selangor.

"Hence, there is no necessity to have another opposition figure. Apart from the opposition Member of Parliament, there are also assemblymen in Hulu Bernam and Batang Kali.

"Thus, our preference should be to nominate the assemblyman we wish to see victorious in Kuala Kubu Baharu from the government's camp," he told reporters after visiting SK Tun Abdul Razak today.

Ahmad Maslan, who is also the deputy works minister, said voters should make reasonable decisions on the upcoming May 11 by-elections to ensure their representatives align with the central government's policies.

"We will support the unity government candidate by having an assemblyman here to represent the state and federal governments. If not, we will not have a representative, as there are already three opposition members.

"This is a crucial decision to make, and I believe the local community and voters in Kuala Kubu Baharu are rational enough to make their choice.

"I hope that when we cast our votes, we consider whether we want to be in the opposition or whether we want to be in the government."

The Election Commission announced the Kuala Kubu Baharu by-election following the death of its assemblyman, Lee Kee Hiong.

Nomination day will be on April 27.
