KUANTAN: Bersatu secretary-general Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainuddin has hinted that the party is ready for a snap state election in Johor if it is called soon.

However, he chose his words carefully when asked about the possibility of polls, saying politicians are people who must be prepared at all times.

"A politician is someone who has to be ready at any time to face the general and state election. When the election is over today, they (politicians) then have to be prepared for the next election… that is quite normal, so everyone has to be prepared.

"When the media raises question on preparations to face the election, it is their (political parties) strategy to reply that they are prepared," he said.

Hamzah was speaking to reporters after handing over seven Whaly boats of various sizes worth RM267,000 to the police at the Galing General Operations Force (GOF) camp here today.

Pressed further if his reply meant that Bersatu was prepared to battle in Johor, Hamzah replied that he had already mentioned that all politicians have to be always prepared once an election is over.

"After an election has passed, they have to prepare for the next one… that is normal," he reiterated.

Talk has been rife about the possibility that Johor would head to the polls following the death of Bersatu's Kempas assemblyman Datuk Osman Sapian on Dec 21.

His death left the Barisan Nasional-led Johor government with 28 seats and Pakatan Harapan with 27 seats.

Yesterday, Umno vice-president Datuk Seri Mahdzir Khalid was quoted as saying that the party was ready if Johor decides to go to the polls.
