SHAH ALAM: Bersatu secretary-general Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainuddin today teared up as he delivered his winding-up speech following the announcement made by the party's president, yesterday.

During the party's final day of its annual general assembly (AGM) today, Hamzah, who is also the opposition leader said Muhyiddin's position as the party president could not be replaced by any individual due to the latter's spirit in championing the party's struggle.

"Tan Sri (Muhyiddin), you are not only our hero but you are also a fighter in championing our religion and race for the country that we love.

"I am very sad (to hear your announcement) and I witnessed many of the delegates who also cried (at hearing your announcement). However, we need you to know that we are here and we love you very much.

"You (Muhyiddin) also told me once that you are indispensable, however, we do not want to hear any excuses (from you to not defend your post)," he said during his winding-up speech.

Hamzah also said that the party still needs Muhyiddin as the latter is what defines Bersatu as whole.

"What's important is that you are the symbol of this party that we love, we want to continue championing our struggles and we still want you (to be the president)."

Earlier, the party's AGM unanimously passed the motion to reject the decision made by Muhyiddin to not defend his post.

The delegates also passed two other motions relating to the matter, which are the motion to reject its supreme council members from holding meetings to discuss potential candidates for Muhyiddin's predecessors, as well as the current assembly to be Muhyiddin's final one as a president.
