KUALA LUMPUR: The government has appointed Datuk Anis Rizana Mohd Zainudin as the new director-general of the Customs Department.

Sources told New Straits Times that Anis Rizana, who was previously the Finance Ministry deputy secretary-general (investment), is set to become the first woman Customs DG in Malaysia.

It is understood that she will begin her two-year tenure on September 25.

She will be replacing Datuk Zazuli Johan who was appointed in July last year.

Anis Rizana began her career in early 1993 serving the private sector in the stockbroking firms and manufacturing industry before joining the public sector in 1994. She was appointed as the Senior Private Secretary to the Minister of Finance in 1999.

She also served as the Principal Assistant Secretary in various divisions under the MOF such as the Finance Division; MOF Inc.; Privatisation and Coordination Division; Loan Management and Finance Policy Division; Economics and International Division and Budget Management Division.

In 2008, she was appointed as the Deputy Under Secretary of the Investment, MOF Inc. and Privatisation Division, and after two years as the General Manager of Corporate Planning at Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad under the Cross Fertilisation Programme (Khazanah Nasional Berhad/Public Service Department), she served as the Head of the Economic Stimulus Secretariat Unit, MOF.

In 2009, Anis Rizana served as a Special Functions Officer to the Chief Secretary of the Government under the Prime Minister's Department. Subsequently in 2012, she was appointed as the Deputy Under Secretary, Remuneration Policy, Public Money, and Management Services Division.

She served as Director of the Integrity and Governance Division (NKRA Against Corruption) in 2014, before being appointed as the Senior Research Fellow and thereafter assumed the responsibility as the Head of Cluster for Development and Policy Research at INTAN, Bukit Kiara. In 2018, she was appointed as the Head of Cluster for the Economics and Public Finance Cluster in INTAN.

She was thereafter promoted as the Deputy Secretary General (Operations) for the Ministry of Women, Family and Community Development in 2019 before assuming her current position.
