PETALING JAYA: CarSome and Petaling Jaya police today launched a vehicle theft signage campaign to raise awareness on vehicle theft.

Petaling Jaya district police chief Assistant Commissioner Mohamad Fakhrudin Abdul Hamid said the signages would be put up at several vehicle theft hotspots to increase public awareness on vehicle safety.

"The purpose of this campaign is to urge all vehicle users to always be careful and lock their cars.

"Valuable items should not be left in the car.

"Police plan to put up 34 signboards in this campaign, at six locations in Petaling Jaya: Desa Mentari 3, Pekan SS2, Mentari Court, Sungai Way, Flora Damansara and also Lembah Subang 2.

"With important information and warnings provided on the signs, we hope that the community in Petaling Jaya will be more careful and mindful so that their cars would not be ransacked by thieves."

In January until February this year, 82 vehicle thefts were recorded in Petaling Jaya.

Fakhrudin said the number of vehicle thefts had risen by 17, from the 65 cases recorded in the same period last year.

"We have solved 13 cases, with eight vehicles confiscated in Petaling Jaya."

He said the Proton Wira and Nissan models were the most popular to be stolen for car parts.

"They will steal the spare parts of old cars and sell them.

"As for motorcycles, brands like Honda and Yamaha are most desired by thieves.

"However, most of the thefts that involve car windows being broken are caused by leaving valuable items like laptops in the car," said Fakhrudin during a press conference.

CarSome co-founder and academy chief executive officer, Jiun Ee Teoh said the company was joining forces with the police to increase safety awareness among motorists.

"For now, we are focusing on Petaling Jaya," said Teoh, adding that they would assess the progress of the campaign before expanding it to other areas.
