LANGKAWI: Former Langkawi Member of Parliament Datuk Ir Nawawi Ahmad, 61, passed away this morning in Frankfurt, Germany.

It was learnt that Nawawi, who was also the Langkawi Umno division chief, passed away about 3am.

Langkawi Umno division's deputy chief Nor Saidi Nanyan confirmed Nawawi's passing when contacted this morning.

"I am made to understand that he left to Frankfurt in work trip in his capacity as a member of Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) Board of Directors.

"He was accompanied by his wife Datin Sabariah Hassan and I understand that the body will be buried in Frankfurt," he said.

Nawawi had an extensive experience in politics and served for one term as Langkawi MP from 2013 to 2018.

However, he lost the seat to former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad in the 14th General Election (GE14) in May 2018.

Prior to that, he had served as Kuah assemblyman for two terms between between 2004 and 2013.
