KUALA LUMPUR: Prominent economist Dr Agoes Salim, known as the "Father of the Rukun Negara", has passed away due to old age. He was 90.

According to Sinar Harian, Agoes, who was also the first secretary general of the National Unity Ministry, will be buried in Port Dickson, Negeri Sembilan.

"He contributed a lot to the country during Tun Abdul Razak Hussein's (second Malaysian prime minister) era," said Agoes' son, Omar Salim in the report.

Aside from the Rukun Negara, Agoes, a former Bank Pertanian chairman, also helped develop the New Economic Policy (NEP).
