KUALA LUMPUR: For the first time, a full recitation of the Rukun Negara pledge with the preamble was carried out in the Dewan Rakyat sitting, today.

The recitation was led by the Dewan Rakyat secretary Nizam Mydin Bacha Mydin, with members of parliament (MPs) from both sides joining the recitation before the minister's question time took place.

Yesterday, National Unity Minister Datuk Aaron Ago Dagang said a full recitation of the Rukun Negara pledge would be held at the Lower House starting today.

The initiative, he said, was approved by the Cabinet on July 25 last year.

"This historic move is solely aimed at inculcating the spirit of unity and eradicating hatred and racism among the people of Malaysia," he said in a statement today.

Aaron said in a multi-racial and multicultural society like Malaysia, people's unity was the key to progress and stability, and that everyone must accept and practise the ideals enshrined in Rukun Negara.
