ALOR GAJAH: A couple rammed their vehicle into a Crime Prevention and Community Safety Department (BPJKK) Mobile Patrol Vehicle (MPV) on Jalan Sungai Tuang, Kuala Sungai Baru, yesterday out of fear of being apprehended for close proximity (khalwat).

Alor Gajah District police chief Superintendent Ashari Abu Samah said the incident occurred at 9:45pm when two officers were conducting crime prevention patrols in the area and stopped to inspect a Ford Ranger driven by the couple.

He said the officers had stopped their patrol car behind the suspicious-looking four-wheel-drive vehicle in a secluded and dark area.

"The patrol officers stopped their vehicle behind the Ford Ranger and turned on the beacon light, but the driver attempted to flee by reversing the vehicle and ended up ramming into the police car.

"The male suspect, aged 44, was successfully detained along with a 25-year-old woman inside the vehicle," he said in a statement today.

He said the couple acted out of fear of being caught for khalwat.

"The incident caused damage to the police MPV, including the passenger side front door, a broken window, and the door can no longer be opened.

"Both individuals were detained, and an investigation is being conducted under Section 186 of the Penal Code for obstructing a public servant in the discharge of their duties," he said.
