KOTA KINABALU: Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) supreme council member Datuk Seri Lajim Ukin has been placed in medically induced coma after contracting Covid-19 for more than a week.

A source said Lajim, who is also Amanah Ikhtiar Malaysia executive chairman, had been put in Covid-induced coma about 2pm today.

"He has been warded for 12 days at the KPJ Hospital since Aug 13. A day before his hospitalisation, he had followed Chief Minister Datuk Hajiji Noor to visit Kudat and when he was at home at night, he had complained of feeling unwell.

"I have taken him to the Gleneagles Hospital for treatment where he tested positive for Covid-19 after being screened using the Rapid Test Kit-Antigen (RTK-Ag) and the Reverse Transcription Polymerase Chain Reaction (RT-PCR) tests.

"We returned home that night and the next day I sent him to the KPJ Hospital for treatment and he has been put under close observation until today," said the source when contacted.

The source said Lajim's health had slowly deteriorated after he was admitted and he also suffered from lung infection.

"He (Lajim) had called his family in the morning today and informed them that he is feeling sick, but we are not sure what he meant by that. After that, the hospital had called his wife informing her that Datuk Seri (Lajim) had to be put in induced coma and the family had given their consent for it."

The source also said Lajim had other health conditions including heart problem, diabetes, high blood pressure and renal problem, but all of them were under control.
