KUALA LUMPUR: Beautification project for seven laneways and one public space in Bukit Bintang, Kuala Lumpur has given ‘new life’ to the once unkempt street.

The Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) started the beautification initiative in December last year which included putting up lights to ensure the area was safe for locals and tourists.

The laneways have become the main walkway for pedestrians because of its shady paths and also shortcuts to Jalan Berangan to Changkat Bukit Bintang, Jalan Tengkat Tong Shin, Jalan Alor and areas around it.

Executive Director (Project Management) of DBKL, Datuk Seri Mohd Najib Mohd said the project costs around RM1.5 million.

“We spent a bit, but the economic spin that this project has brought for the businesses around here have increased greatly.

“This project helps make the city much more safer, it provides a nice ambiance and locals who live here participate in taking care of the plants and birds which they actually enjoy doing,” he said at a press conference in Laman Rembia, Jalan Rembia, Bukit Bintang.

At night, local residents take up the responsibility of turning on the lights to keep the laneways safe.

Meanwhile, artists under contract have the chance to express their art work on the walls along the laneways.

Mohd Najib added that the project, which still has some unfinished elements, will complete in about five more months.
