KUALA LUMPUR: Retired and former policemen bill is expected to be tabled in the parliament in the middle of next year, the Dewan Rakyat was told today.

Deputy Home Minister Datuk Seri Shamsul Anuar Nasarah said the bill was a proactive step to govern the group in the country in a more organised manner.

Under the bill, he said, a specific department under the ministry would be established and given clear jurisdiction related to the registry of retired and former policemen, as well as related associations.

"This will facilitate measures to protect their wellbeing and an assurance to ease the process of distributing aid to retired and former policemen.

"Aid and the channelling of allocations would be coordinated properly and effectively, as being done by the Armed Forces Veterans Department," he said in reply to a supplementary question from Datuk Shamshulkahar Mohd Deli (BN-Jempol).

Earlier, Shamsul Anuar said the ministry's legal division was currently reviewing the matter before an engagement session is carried out next year.

"The draft of the bill will then be presented to the cabinet for approval before it is tabled (in the parliament) in the middle of next year.

"Currently, the police retirees division is responsible for managing the welfare of the pensioners and former policemen, as well as their next of kin registered nationwide," he said in reply to a question from Zahari Kechik (PN-Jeli).

Up to Sept 29, a total 54,603 former policemen and retirees have registered with the division, with 44,889 of them are pensioners, 3,148 former policemen and 6,566 next of kin, he said.

He said all police card holders are eligible to receive assistance through Tabung Amanah Waris Polis including death benefits, medical and education.
