GEORGE TOWN: A social media influencer, who is also involved in online business, was charged in the magistrate's court here today with stealing a handphone belonging to her ex-boyfriend in April.
Sarah Leo Ee May, 33, claimed trial to the charge before magistrate lnadratun Naim Mohd Saidi.
She is accused of stealing an OPPO Reno8 5G handphone worth RM2,000 belonging to Andrew Yeap Hue Bing from a car at the parking lot of the Gleneagles Hospital here about 10pm on April 26.
The charge under Section 379 of the Penal Code carries up to seven years' imprisonment or fine, or both, upon conviction.
Deputy public prosecutor S. Preeya Darrsini prosecuted while lawyer Cheah Eng Soon represented the accused.
During proceedings, Preeya Darrsini urged the court to set bail at RM7,000.
Cheah, however, pleaded for a minimum bail amount, stressing that it was merely to secure his client's attendance in court and should not be punitive in nature.
He said the case involving Leo was a result of a misunderstanding with her ex-boyfriend, who is also involved in business.
The court set bail at RM3,000 with one surety and fixed July 24 for mention.
