GEORGE TOWN: A Form Two student here was detained by police for allegedly pushing a classmate down the hostel staircase last Thursday.

The two are students of an educational institution under Mara in Balik Pulau.

The 11pm incident left the 14-year-old victim with injuries below the right eye and nose.

State police chief Datuk Khaw Kok Chin today said police detained the suspect to assist in a probe into voluntarily causing grievous hurt.

He said the suspect was released on police bail after having a statement taken.

"The two students were pushing each other before the victim fell." He said this at the state police contingent headquarters here.

The victim was taken to Balik Pulau Hospital for outpatient treatment before being referred to Penang Hospital for further checks.

Khaw said the incident happened following a misunderstanding between the two students.

The incident comes on the heels of a bullying case at the same institution.

Five Form Five students have been held to assist an investigation into a bullying case involving a Form Three student on May 18.

The incident was believed to have occurred due to a misunderstanding and the victim was injured in the assault by a group of seniors.

The 17-year-old boys were released on police bail after their statements were taken.

In an unrelated incident, Khaw said police had classified the case of a missing girl, 5, from Taman Perda, Kuala Muda, Penaga, as a missing person's report.

He said police had not found any criminal element.

The girl, who was playing outside her house on Friday, disappeared for almost 24 hours before she was found.

When found, there were injuries on her body.
