SHAH ALAM: A proposal for future Muslim converts to divorce his or her non-Muslim spouse before converting will be discussed by Selangor Islamic Religious Council (Mais).

Mais chairman Datuk Adzib Mohd Isa however said he could not give his opinion on the proposal without discussing with all 20 Mais members first.

"I need to discuss with the rest of Mais members before we can decide whether it would be wise to adopt the same for Selangor," he said.

Menteri Besar Mohamed Azmin Ali yesterday said the state government had no plans to implement the ruling, saying it was not an easy matter, without proper discussion with lawmakers, religious scholars and academicians.

Negri Sembilan Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan had last week said the proposed regulations would avoid controversies surrounding disputes between Muslim converts and their non-Muslim spouses and ensure that the religion of Islam is not ridiculed in the process.

He added that the regulation would also ensure that no Muslim convert can take advantage of the law as well as evade various legal complications that happen when one spose convert unilaterally.
