In an attempt to promote outdoor activities among school students, the Education Ministry, through its sports, co-curriculum and arts department, has come up with the Kids Warrior Challenge, an obstacle challenge event, to encourage active living.

The initiative, the brainchild of SH Timeline Creative, is based on the popular American Ninja Warrior event.

A 300m inflatable obstacle course will be used to test the physical strength, speed and endurance of students (aged between seven and 15).

The Kids Warrior Challenge will be held nationwide, involving 35,000 students from close to 1,000 schools, except for Sabah and Sarawak.

Selected students will represent their respective states at the National Sports Day in October.

Education Ministry sports, co-curriculum and arts department director Zainal Abas hopes the event will encourage students to stay active as obesity has become a problem in the country.

“Through the event, students will be able to improve their physical and mental strength,” said Zainal at the launch in Kuala Lumpur yesterday.

“It is a move to promote a balance between studies and sports among students. I believe events such as this will help them to achieve their goals.

“Television programmes like the ‘American Ninja Warrior’ is popular among Malaysians. And our students will be inspired to test their skills in the Kids Warriors Challenge.

“We hope to expand this programme to Sabah and Sarawak in the near future.”

The competition will have four categories (7-8, 9-10, 11-12, 13-15 age groups) for boys and girls.

The top-three individuals from each category from the state-level competitions will qualify for the national-level championships.

SH Timeline Creative director Siti Ruhaizah Kastop said: “We will kick it off in Perlis. We are expecting about 1,000 students from 104 schools in the three-day competition (Feb 27-29).”

After the Perlis leg, the Kids Warrior Challenge will move to Jitra, Kedah (March 19-21), followed by Kuala Terengganu (March 27-29).

The dates of the other legs will be finalised soon.

Students who are interested can either register via online (KWC Malaysia) or through their respective schools.
