SQUASH legend Nicol David has been named as “the mentor” for the Malaysian Sea Games contingent.

Sports Minister Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman said he is confident the appointment of the eight-time world champion will fire up the Malaysian athletes, especially the young ones.

“I am confident that with Nicol’s presence and she meeting them, especially during the night before a big match, will bring a huge change (in results),” said Syed Saddiq yesterday,

Nicol said she is both excited and thrilled to be able to share her 21-year experience as a player with the national contingent.

Nicol, who retired from competitive squash in June, said: “I feel different today, wearing the national contingent’s official suit because I have always dressed as an athlete to represent the country but today, I get to play a bigger role.”

Nicol, who will depart for Manila on Dec 6, added: “I pray all our athletes do well. They have worked hard and now it’s time to enjoy the Games and give it all they’ve got.” Jumiati Rosly
