KUALA LUMPUR: National bowler Muhammad Rafiq Ismail made history when he emerged victorious in the singles event at the Men’s World Bowling Championship in Hong Kong today.

The Asian Games gold medallist was in his element as he defeated Canada’s Dan Maclelland 217-204.

Earlier, in the semi-final which was also held yesterday, Rafiq had to weather tough competition from American Kyle Troup before he got the better of his opponent to narrowly win 171-170.

Rafiq’s victory sees him becoming Malaysia’s first bowler to win the singles event at the prestigious championship since 1979.

"In the final, i told myself that I needed to be consistent and patient, and also to attack the lines (on the lane).

"Of course I am more than satisfied with my performance here today (Saturday) because this is my first medal at the World Championship and what makes it even better is that it’s a gold medal,” he said when contacted yesterday.

The last time Malaysia won gold at the prestigious championship was 39 years ago in the trio event through Allan Hooi, Ed Lim and J.B. Koo in Manila, the Philippines.

Rafiq expressed his gratitude to his coaches, fellow teammates, family and friends for their support which spurred him to perform when it mattered most.

"I feel happy. I must thank my coaches Holloway Cheah and Ben Heng for guiding me throughout the tournament.

"Not forgetting my teammates, friends and family who have been supporting me,” he said.
