KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad has congratulated the national para athletic contingent on raking in 15 gold medals at the Asian Para Games in Jakarta recently.

“They had the spirit to win the game, even though they were in wheelchairs.

“I want to congratulate them for their achievement,” he told reporters after launching the National Sports Day 2018 celebration at Bukit Jalil Stadium here today.

Aside from the medals, the Malaysian para athletes set two world records at the games on Oct 9.

Among them was Ridzuan Puzi, who won the 100m T36 event in 11.87 seconds at the Gelora Bung Karno Stadium, erasing the world record of 11.90s set by Russia’s Evgenii Shvetcov at the 2013 World Championships in Lyon.

In total, Malaysia bagged 15 gold, 24 silver and 21 bronze medals – a haul matching the record set at the Asian Para Games in Incheon, South Korea in 2014.
