KUALA LUMPUR: Melaka High School were crowned Division 2 champions of the Malaysian Junior Hockey League (MJHL) for the first time in Bukit Jalil on Sunday.

In the Division 2 final at National Hockey Stadium, the Melaka side edged Sabah 2-0 in a penalty shootout after a 2-2 draw in regulation time.

Naqib Asyraf Abdullah and Safuwan Sharudin converted for Melaka in the shootout, while Sabah failed to score.

During regulation play, Melaka HS took the lead through Safuwan in the fourth minute, but Sabah fought back to score two goals through Elazer Brendley Elday (18th minute) and Rafiq Raze (24th minute).

Fariz Lukman Amirudin leveled the score for Melaka HS in the 53rd minute.

Both teams will play in Division One next year.

Melaka HS coach Fahmi Zulikfli Auni praised his players for their fighting spirit in the final.

"Our hard work in training has paid off handsomely," said Fahmi, who has been coaching Melaka HS since 2020 .

Meanwhile, Young Lions of Perlis finished third after beating Negri Sembilan 5-3 in a penalty shootout after2-2 draw in regulation time.
