KUALA LUMPUR: China's Liaoning exacted sweet revenge over Malaysian Universiti (MU) to win the Vivian May Soars Cup final at the National Hockey Stadium in Bukit Jalil today.

Liaoning, who finished runners-up to MU in the women's Malaysia Hockey League (WMHL), defeated their rivals 3-0 in a shootout following a 1-1 draw in regulation time.

Wang Lihang, 16, gave Liaoning the lead in the 44th minute to emerge as the top scorer this year with 18 goals.

However, MU, who also won the Charity Shield, responded through Nor Asfarina Isahyifiqa Isahhhidun when she converted a penalty stroke in the 55th minute.

In the penalty shootout, Lihang, Wang Libin and LiYijia converted their attempts, while MU failed to score.

The win was Liaoning's second triumph following their success in 2019.

"It is like a dream for me here. I am only 16 years old, and I have emerged as the top scorer," said a delighted Wang Lihang.

"It was a good experience playing for the first time in a foreign league. I hope the experience will develop my game as my dream is to play for my country."

Meanwhile, Blue Warriors finished third after overcoming Negri Sembilan 2-0 at the same venue.
