KUALA LUMPUR: Umno has mobilised its legal advisor, Datuk Mohd Hafarizam Harun, to extend assistance to its Youth chief, Dr Akmal Saleh, following his detention earlier today at the Kota Kinabalu police district headquarters.
Dr Akmal has since been released after giving his statement in a session lasting over two hours.
He was summoned in relation to a police report filed against him under the Sedition Act concerning a lecture video in Kelantan.
Umno secretary-general, Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki, confirmed the move, expressing relief that Dr Akmal is in good condition and cooperating fully with the police during their investigative procedures.
"Alhamdulillah, he is in good condition and fully cooperated with the police who were carrying out their duties," he said in a statement today.
Earlier, Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Tan Sri Razarudin Husain confirmed that investigations are underway against Dr Akmal.
In a brief statement, the top cop said police received two reports against the Merlimau assemblyman's actions and investigations are underway.
Razarudin said investigations were initiated under Section 4(1) of the Sedition Act 1948 and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 and once complete, would be handed to the Attorney-General's Chambers for further instructions.
