KUALA LUMPUR: Umno Youth chief Dr Akmal Saleh has been arrested.

In a Facebook post, Akmal said he was being detained at the Kota Kinabalu district police headquarters even though he was scheduled to give a statement to the police in Dang Wangi in Kuala Lumpur tomorrow.

"I will give my full cooperation. I will not budge even an inch in our stand," he said.

It is understood that Akmal was detained at the Kota Kinabalu International Airport before being brought to the KK police headquarters.Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Razarudin Husain has confirmed that Akmal is being probed for sedition. He is also being probed under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act for improper use of network facilities.

While Akmal did not reveal the reason for this arrest, there have been calls for him to be probed over his recent social media postings.

Akmal has been at the forefront of calls for action and a boycott against KK Mart over the "Allah" socks controversy.

More recently, there were calls for his arrest over a social media posting showing him wielding a sword.

On Wednesday, Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Tan Sri Razarudin Husain was reported as saying that no probe has been initiated into Akmal over the post as no report had been lodged against the Merlimau assemblyman.

However, several parties including former law minister Datuk Zaid Ibrahim and human rights group, Lawyers for Liberty, have questioned the necessity of a report to be lodged for the police to act.

There have been growing calls for all parties to stand down on the socks issue.

Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia, said action had been taken by the authorities and there was no need for anyone to continue exploiting the issue and fuelling anger.
