KUALA LUMPUR: Parliamentary Opposition Leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has no concerns about the possibility of being appointed Prime Minister.

Instead, he said the priority now is to focus on the responsibility to shoulder his current role, as a check and balance by leading the opposition bloc.

"If you look at a case like Pandora's Papers, it (on being appointed as Prime Minister) only makes the matter more challenging.

"The whole power, the political elite, the conglomerates and the media will help you, hence I am not worried about that (being appointed prime minister or vice versa).

"I will just do my job, Que será será (what is going to happen will happen). If I continue to be the leader of the opposition, I accept. If I become the prime minister, Alhamdulillah to God," he said.

The Port Dickson MP was responding to a question on when he would be appointed Prime Minister, during an interview with ABC Australia radio, yesterday.

Anwar's past political journey saw him nearly being appointed as the Prime Minister, after serving as Deputy Prime Minister from Dec 1 1993 to Sept 2 1998.

However, he was sacked from the Cabinet by the then Prime Minister, Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, and was stripped of his appointed posts as Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister following a dispute between the two leaders on handling the Asian financial crisis.

In 1999, Anwar was jailed after being convicted of corruption and sodomy, charges believed to be politically motivated.

The second opportunity for Anwar to be appointed as the Prime Minister came when he and Dr Mahathir worked together, which saw Pakatan Harapan defeat Barisan Nasional (BN) in the 14th General Election (GE-14).

In 2019, Dr Mahathir was said to have received pressure from Anwar's supporters in the coalition, who urged the Langkawi MP to set a date for handing over power.

The transfer of power, however, did not take place when Dr Mahathir decided to resign as Prime Minister, thus seeing the Pakatan Harapan Government collapse within 22 months.
