KUALA LUMPUR: Rembau member of parliament Khairy Jamaluddin Abu Bakar has dismissed the idea of bringing in ex-Umno president Datuk Seri Najib Razak to become the party’s de facto leader as nothing short of “stupid.”

Via his Twitter account, Khairy, who was formerly Umno Youth chief, sarcastically labeled the news report, which quoted Umno supreme council member Datuk Lokman Noor Adam as proposing the move, as “fake news.”

“Jangan sebarkan fake news. Tak ada orang yang akan memberi cadangan bingai macam ni.

“Saya yakin @LokmanAdam pun tak bongap macam ni. Eh.” he wrote.

(Don’t spread fake news. No one would give a stupid idea like this. I’m certain even @LokmanAdam isn’t this dumb)

There is no love lost between Khairy and Lokman, who have on numerous occasions locked horns on social media over a variety of issues.

Khairy had, last month, gone to the extent of stating that were he to become Umno president, the first item on his agenda would to sack Lokman, whom he described as “having the IQ of a carrot.”

Lokman had on Tuesday night proposed for Najib to be appointed as Umno de facto chief and opposition leader, in view of Umno president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahidi’s move in handing over the presidency duties to his deputy, Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan.

Lokman in his statement had argued that at this critical juncture, Umno needs a leader who is not only experienced but also has the respect of Barisan Nasional members of parliament.
