KUALA LUMPUR: Incarcerated former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak will likely be released from prison earlier than Aug 23, 2028.

Umno Supreme Council member Datuk Lokman Adam said this when he pointed out that the Federal Territories Pardons Board's statement that Najib's expected release date is inaccurate.

"The statement issued by the Pardons Board secretariat, which stated that Najib is expected to be released from prison on Aug 23, 2028, is not that accurate.

"We must consider several things when calculating the expected release date from prison.

"It is usually not a full six years but two-thirds of the sentencing period (jail term)," he told reporters after attending the Umno Supreme Council special meeting to discuss Najib's pardon today.

Lokman added that other factors needed to be considered, including the number of public holidays available in the year when calculating the expected release date.

"For example, if there are 15 days of public holidays in a year, we need to factor it in (calculating Najib's release date from prison).

"Therefore, this does not mean (Najib will be released from prison on) Aug 23, 2028," Lokman said.

It was reported yesterday that the Federal Territories Board had reduced Najib's fine to RM50 million from RM210 million involving his SRC International case.

The board also reduced Najib's jail term by 50 per cent from 12 years to six years.
