KUALA LUMPUR: Fardhu Ain and Kifayah (Kafa) teachers should be given contractual or permanent employment from the government instead of just receiving monthly allowances for their services.

Umno Penang representative Mohd Nashrol Hisham Abdullah made this plea during the debate on Education and Religion here today on the last day of the 71st Umno General Assembly.

Nashrol said at present, an allowance of RM900 per month given to Kafa teachers were insufficient, pushing them to having to resort to doing other jobs as a way to cover living costs.

"I know a kafa teacher who is a van driver by morning and a Kafa teacher by evening.

"She is a mother and RM900 alone is not enough for her family," he said.

Nashrol suggested that the teachers be recognised as civil servants, whether by contract or permanent basis.

They should also be graded using diplomas or degrees.

"There are 33,000 Kafa teachers nationwide, and recognising them in this way will benefit them greatly."

In his debate Nashrol also suggested for Darul Quran, the government institute under the Malaysian Islamic Development Department focusing on Quranic studies, be upgraded into an Ulul Albab university.

He also called for delegates and Umno members in general to support the party leadership in countering attacks, lies and slander from the public, especially those from online platforms.

"There are portals that are spreading vicious attacks on our leaders, I call upon the authorities to take serious action against them for going against the leaders of our country," he said.

He named the Malaysian Insight as one of the portals that should be taken action against for attacking Umno president and Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak.
