PEKAN: As the Tasik Chini Research Centre near here opens its doors to visitors, a Barisan Nasional lawmaker has urged the Pahang government not to "sideline" the once popular Lake Chini Resort.

Chini assemblyman Mohd Shahrim Md Zain said the former three-star resort, which was closed since November 2019, has to be restored to its original glory.

He welcomed the recent announcement to open the accommodation and facilities at the research centre (PPTC) to the public saying it was an vital move towards reviving Tasik Chini, the country's second-largest freshwater lake which once served as a paradise for holidaymakers.

"The move by PPTC to offer customised tour packages for nature lovers and students along with accommodation and campsites will attract visitors.

"However, the resort should not be forgotten as I believe it has to be the focus when speaking about tourism activities at the lake.

"Once the resort resumes operation, locals and foreigners will return to visit Tasik Chini in huge numbers as the lake is a tourism asset and offers a huge potential as a top tourist attraction.

"People can stay at the resort, enjoy boat rides, visit the nearby Orang Asli settlements and participate in outdoor activities," he said today.

Shahrim was earlier asked on the fate of the Lake Chini Resort following State Unity, Tourism and Culture Committee chairman Leong Yu Man's announcement on June 23 that PPTC will host visitors, including tour groups to stay and explore the lake.

Shahrim said he was not expecting things to happen overnight but felt that the Pahang government could begin talks with PPTC about offering camping sites near the resort.

"I realised the dilapidated condition of the resort has gone viral on social media with some likening the premises to a spot for paranormal activities, and my constituents often come to me asking if there any plans to reopen the resort.

"We can clean the area around the resort and work closely with PPTC to provide camping facilities until an investor comes onboard to operate the resort premises.

"I am sure that providing campsites near the lake with proper facilities and promotions will lure people to visit Tasik Chini," said Shahrim, adding he would meet Leong on the proposal.

It is learnt that Lake Chini Resort is under the jurisdiction of Perbadanan Setiausaha Kerajaan (PSK) Pahang, and an announcement will be made soon on the fate of the resort which was opened in 1985.
