ISKANDAR PUTERI: Police arrested 21 motorists and seized 31 vehicles for various traffic offences in a series of operations over a two-week period beginning May 30.

District police chief Assistant Commissioner M Kumarasan said the operations focused on reckless driving, drunk driving, and overweight commercial vehicles plying the roads in the police district jurisdiction.

In the first operation against reckless driving ,codenamed 'Op Samseng Jalanan', nine men aged between 16 and 25 were arrested. Also arrested were two foreign men and a 30-year-old woman, for reckless and dangerous driving.

The 12 motorists were arrested under Section 42(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, and may face up to a five-year prison term, fines between RM5,000 and RM20,000 and a two-year license suspension.

Under Op Mabuk, which was conducted against intoxicated drivers, six men aged between 20 and 50 were arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol.

They were charged under Section 45A(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.

Upon conviction, they may face fines between RM10,000 and RM30,000, imprisonment term up to two years, and a two-year license suspension.

Meanwhile in 'Op Perdagangan', an operation targeting overloaded heavy vehicles, two men in their 30s were arrested when their vehicles were found to have breached its permitted load capacity.

Kumarasan said lorries laden over the permitted weight violated Section 57(3) of the Land Public Transport Act.

The offence is punishable with a fine between RM1,000 and RM500,000 or an imprisonment term up to two years, or both.

He added 29 motorcycles and two cars were impounded for various traffic offences under Section 64 of the Road Transport Act 1987.

Police also issued 937 summonses throughout the 14-day operations.
