KOTA KINABALU: The Sabah government has been urged to hold the annual international dragon boat race in May.
Sabah Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Christina Liew said the month coincided with the Kaamatan (Harvest Festival) celebration.
She said this when officiating at the Sunset Beach Party, where a torch-lighting ceremony was held to mark the start of the 9th Sabah FCAS International Dragon Boat Race at Likas Bay yesterday.
She said the Dragon Boat Race and the Harvest Festival were major cultural events that promoted tourism activities in Sabah.
"We want to draw more tourists and visitors for a unique and memorable experience while holidaying in Sabah. They get to see two significant events, making their trip to the Land Below the Wind more worthwhile."
At a press conference later, Liew said FCAS, under the leadership of president Tan Sri T.C. Goh, has agreed to her proposal.
"I will present the proposal to the state government for consideration and approval."
Goh and FCAS deputy president Datuk Susan Wong, who is also the event organising chairperson, expressed their gratitude to the state government for its continued support for the Sabah FCAS International Dragon Boat Race.
Present were Assistant Agriculture, Fisheries and Food Industry Minister Peto Galim, Head of Consular Office of Japan in Kota Kinabalu Yamashita Yoshito and City Mayor Datuk Seri Dr Sabin Samitah.
