KUALA LUMPUR: Universiti Malaya incurred property damages estimated at more than RM1 million following Saturday's storm which hit several parts of the city and Petaling Jaya.

A statement from the university said several facilities were damaged and uprooted trees fell on vehicles at its campus during heavy rain, strong winds and thunderstorms at about 6.15pm.

"It was reported that 29 vehicles were damaged and 12 roads around the campus were blocked by fallen trees.

"Apart from the reported damaged vehicles, several facilities were also damaged, with an estimated cost of losses so far exceeds RM1 million.

"However, no serious injuries or fatalities have been reported in this incident," it said last night.

UM said swift actions by members from the campus security and management successfully controlled the situation and ensured the safety of the affected areas.

"A cleanup and restoration team managed by UM's Property Management Division was promptly mobilised to clean up the affected areas.

"The cleaning process is being carried out in several phases. UM is currently in the cleaning phase to reopen blocked roads, expected to be completed by today (May 27).

"The overall cleaning process, including debris removal, is expected to take at least 10 days from the day of the incident."

The university said it would work with local authorities and relevant departments to ensure better safety measures are taken to prevent such incidents from recurring.

"The university also sympathises with the losses incurred by those affected by this incident, particularly involving vehicle damages.

"Therefore, those affected by this incident can contact the Safety Centre and Property Management Division for insurance claims due to this storm.

"We apologise for any inconvenience experienced and appreciate the cooperation and understanding of all parties involved," it said.

On Saturday, the Kuala Lumpur Fire and Rescue Department Operations Centre said there were multiples distress calls regarding fallen trees in various parts of the city due to heavy rain and strong winds.

The affected areas were primarily at Taman Tun Dr Ismail and Universiti Malaya.
