KOTA KINABALU: The Sabah state government has unveiled plans to develop Pulau Gaya as a new tourist hotspot, Sabah Media reported.

Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor said that the government intends to reorganise settlements on the island, particularly squatter areas, to enhance its tourism appeal.

In a statement during the Ramadan Compassion Journey event on Pulau Gaya, Hajiji mentioned the need for a systematic approach to relocate squatter residents to proper housing constructed on the Sabah mainland.

"We aim to present Pulau Gaya as a key tourist attraction. The current disorganised squatter settlements could mar our efforts to beautify the island and attract tourists," he said.

Hajiji stressed that although Pulau Gaya possesses the qualities of an excellent tourist spot, the unsystematic squatter areas are incompatible with the proposed plans.

"Pulau Gaya holds a special place in our history and is just a five-minute boat ride from the state capital. We must leverage this proximity," he added.

Additionally, the Parliamentary Office plans to construct a health clinic on the island.

Hajiji emphasised the importance of maintaining unity, security, and cleanliness among the island's residents to ensure the success of this tourism initiative.
