BATU PAHAT: A convoy of eight Singaporean men heading for sahur in Pagoh, Muar turned into a tragedy when two of them were killed after their motorcycles were hit by a trailer.

Batu Pahat District Police Chief, Assistant Commissioner Ismail Dollah said the accident, which occurred at Kilometre 111.4 of the North-South Expressway near Yong Peng early this morning, is believed to have happened when the eight men were riding in convoy.

He said during the journey, the tyre of one of the motorcycles in the convoy reportedly burst, and the rider had stopped at the Yong Peng R&R (rest and recreational) area.

"Upon noticing the incident, the seven riders in front of the rider had stopped their motorcycles and waited in the emergency lane.

"Shortly after, a trailer from the same direction, driven by a 33-year-old local man, lost control and entered the emergency lane.

"The trailer then collided with the convoy group, resulting in two of them dying at the scene," he said in a statement today.

Ismail said the two deceased were 26 years old, while four others suffered severe injuries and are receiving treatment at Sultanah Fatimah Specialist Hospital, Muar.

He said the trailer driver, along with his 29-year-old assistant and one of the convoy riders, did not sustain any injuries.

"The trailer driver has been remanded for three days starting from today to assist in the investigation. Urine tests conducted on the driver returned negative," he said.
