KUALA LUMPUR: His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia has given the "green light" to the Dewan Rakyat Speaker to take action against any member of Parliament who "go overboard" in Parliament.

In his royal address at the First Meeting of the Third Session of the 15th Parliament, His Majesty said the Dewan Rakyat Speaker could ban MPs who do not behave well for 14 days.

Sultan Ibrahim said Parliament was a place where lawmakers gathered to make the rules, and should therefore abide by the rules that they make.

"It would not make sense if lawmakers themselves do not abide by the rules that they create.

"Therefore, I hope MPs set a good example when they are in this honourable Dewan Rakyat by maintaining decorum, adhering to the regulations, being polite and refrain from insulting others.

"Looking at the behaviour of MPs during the past sitting, I would be ashamed to even enter the Dewan Rakyat.

"I give the green light to the speaker to take action against any MP who go overboard and impose a 14-day ban if they remain stubborn," His Majesty said.
