GEORGE TOWN: A stop-work order has been issued for part of Package Two of the bypass project from the Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu Expressway to Air Itam.

State Infrastructure Committee chairman Zairil Khir Johari said this was because the developer had worked outside permitted hours.

To compound matters, he said, the works was not for mitigation-related matters.

"The Penang Island City Council (MBPP) has issued an immediate stop-work order. It is only for the section in question," he told the New Straits Times.

This came after a DAP assemblyman told the state government to prioritise the welfare of the people and take action against entities that jeopardise their safety and comfort.

Seri Delima assemblyman Connie Tan Hooi Peng had expressed disappointment with Consortium Zenith Construction Sdn Bhd over the alleged trouble it was causing people with the Package 2 project.

Tan claimed that attempts to engage with Consortium Zenith for better coordination and updates were met with inaction.

"The company's disregard for proper communication protocols is unacceptable and has led to severe inconveniences for the community.

"Furthermore, Consortium Zenith has been carrying out construction work beyond permissible hours, including Sundays and public holidays.

"Just on Monday, construction activities extended until 12.30am, depriving residents of their well-deserved rest.

"This continuous disturbance, especially during late hours, is a direct violation of the residents' rights to peace and rest.

"The well-being of our community is paramount, and I will continue to fight for the rights and comfort of our residents," she said recently.

The bypass from Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu Expressway to Air Itam is one of the projects under the Penang Major Roads and Third Link development programme and the Penang Transport Master Plan. Section 1 started in 2021 and Sections 2 to 6 in 2022.

Once completed, the 5.7km-toll-free road connecting Bandar Baharu Air Itam and the Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu Expressway will shorten travel time from 40 to five minutes.
