GEORGE TOWN: Less than 24 hours after its official opening to the public, the Gurney Bay project at Persiaran Gurney here, has received numerous brickbats.

Former Penang chief minister Lim

Guan Eng has taken to his Facebook account to question the quality of work.

The posting was accompanied by photos of the children's play area.

"Spoilt as soon as construction work is completed?

"Not only the ropes (to the children's play area) were damaged but the concrete structure reportedly cracked during the opening day.

"Luckily, the relevant authorities acted on the complaints but questions about the quality of work cannot be avoided," he said.

The Air Putih assemblyman and Bagan member of parliament said the Gurney Bay project, costing RM247 million, was filled with concrete wall design, casting doubt and questions on the original plan, design, supervision and quality of work.

"The RM247 million spent should bring to an international standard recreation park," he added.

Among those who commented on Lim's Facebook posting was Jayson Ooi, who said "True. Went there last night the toilet can't flush.... no water."

Seudonim Satoshi said it looked like an issue with product quality.

"Should be able to take up some level of abuse there.

"Unless some crazy man used a tool to cut it," he added.

Marie Teng asked if no checks were done for quality before the project's opening.

She also asked where was the quality controller.

Penang yesterday rolled out its latest attraction, the Gurney Bay, which is divided into two phases.

Phase One, covering 11.2ha, was opened to the public yesterday.

It includes a children's play area, skate park, south vantage point viewing deck, public toilets, pedestrian promenade, hawker stalls, retail areas, recreation park, hawker kiosks, open car park space and south water body reclamation area.
