GEORGE TOWN: The contractor of the Gurney Bay project will undertake any repairs at the site, the Penang government said today.

Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow told his predecessor Lim Guan Eng that the damage liability period of the project meant that the contractor was responsible for repairs at the site for two years.

Chow was responding to Lim's claim of shoddy work at Gurney Bay.

"On the damage at the site, the contractor is responsible for two years under the damage liability period condition," he said.

Lim posted pictures on Facebook earlier today showing defects at Gurney Bay and questioned the quality of the work.

He said phase one of Gurney Bay, which cost RM247 million, was riddled with crack in the concrete, and questioned the original plan, design, supervision and quality of work.

"The RM247 million spent should bring to an international standard recreation park," Lim had posted.

Chow said there were mistakes in the figure cited by Lim.

Chow said RM247 million was the cost for phases one and two of Gurney Bay.

"As of December last year, the state government only paid RM58 million for works completed.

"The full RM247 million will be spent only when all the components of Gurney Bay are completed in 2026," he said.

The New Straits Times visited the site and found damaged rope at the children's play area and dislodged screws.

State Local Government Committee chairman Hng Mooi Lye was seen at the site inspecting the damage.
