GEORGE TOWN: Visitors at the newly opened Gurney Bay area here are allowed to bring their pets, but they have to follow the rules.

According to Pulau Tikus assemblyman Joshua Woo, pets will only be allowed at the lower promenade area.

"They must be on a leash all the time. Pet owners will also have to clean up after their pets," he said today.

Woo said pet owners found breaching these rules would be fined. Prior to this, there were complaints of visitors bringing dogs to Gurney Bay, causing discomfort and unease among other visitors.

This prompted the Penang Island City Council to deploy their enforcement personnel to monitor the situation.

Since then, signage has been put up to indicate that pets are allowed in a designated area at the bay, along with rules that the owners must comply with.

Phase One of the Gurney Bay project, covering 11.2ha, includes a children's play area, a skate park, a south vantage point viewing deck, public toilets, a pedestrian promenade, hawker stalls, retail areas, recreation park, hawker kiosks, open car park and south water body reclamation area.

It was officially opened early this month.
