IPOH: Ipoh City Council (MBI) has achieved a notable milestone in its cleanliness initiatives, successfully clearing 90 percent of the 470 illegal dumping sites in the year 2023. This accomplishment is a significant step towards MBI's aspiration to establish Ipoh as the cleanest city.

Throughout the year, MBI implemented various programmes to combat illegal dumping. These efforts included the provision of free bulk and garden waste collection services since 2021, with 17 open trucks purchased to facilitate this operation. The service operates on a predetermined schedule, enhancing waste management efficiency.

Additionally, MBI's initiative of distributing free garbage bins to residents has seen substantial progress. By the end of December, a total of 84,547 bins were handed out on weekends as part of the Council Member Zone rotation since the programme's inception in 2021.

The placement of 1,670 "No Littering" signs at identified illegal dumping "hot spots" in 2021 further exemplified MBI's commitment to addressing this issue. The Anti-Litter Unit's stringent and frequent operations have significantly curbed illegal dumping activities, resulting in the issuance of 1,214 fines totalling RM498,750 as of December last year. Out of these, 245 fines worth RM117,095 have been paid.

MBI's strategy also included the construction of domestic waste collection centres in rural areas, a move that has contributed to reducing illegal dumping at known "hot spot" locations. To date, 13 collection centres have been established, with daily waste collection services.

These comprehensive measures reflect MBI's dedication to environmental stewardship and public health, showcasing effective municipal management in tackling urban waste challenges. The success of these initiatives not only enhances the city's cleanliness but also fosters a sense of civic responsibility among its residents.
