JOHOR BARU: Heavy continuous rain since the wee hours of the morning today, caused several stretches of roads in Kota Tinggi to be shut-off to motorists and rivers rose to critical levels.

All 10 districts in Johor experienced continuous heavy rain since 4am until press time, causing roads in Kota Tinggi, namely Jalan Mawai Lama, to be accessible only by heavy vehicles, while Jalan Kota-Tinggi-Kluang and Jalan Kota Tinggi-Kulai are closed to all vehicles. The roads were inundated with water levels reaching 0.40m high.

Sungai Kahang in Kampung Contoh, Kluang and Sungai Kepala Orang in Kampung Jaya, Kota Tinggi, reached critical levels of 14.37m and 8.55m, respectively.

There are two temporary relief centres operating in Mersing with 170 flash flood victims from Kampung Air Papan and Kampung Tenglu.

In Kluang, the relief centres in Sembrong and Tenggara recorded 102 victims from 32 families, after they were instructed to evacuate their houses in Kampung Contoh and Kampung Sungai Berangan.Kota Tinggi has 66 victims in the relief centres at Sedili, housing victims from Kampung Gembut and Kampung Perpat.

A relief centre in Jementah, Segamat was opened at 10am today, to house victims who are currently instructed to evacuate their houses.

State Flood Disaster Management Committee chairman Tan Sri Dr Azmi Rohani said as at 10am today, four districts are affected by the floods, with 338 victims from 92 families.

However, victims from several areas in Segamat were given evacuation notice after water level rose due to the heavy downpour.

He also urged the victims not to worry about their belongings left behind in their houses, as police conducted regular crime prevention patrol at the evacuated victim at the housing estates to deter break-ins.
